Great Northern

Irelands largest Independent Distillery. Distilling single malt, pot still and single grain whiskey in 2015.

Welcome to Great Northern Distillery in Dundalk, Co. Louth in Ireland. Located on the former site of the Great Northern Brewery, an area long associated with brewing and distilling, our new distillery is a three copper pot still operation reviving the traditional style of Irish whiskey distillation. The town of Dundalk has always been idealy suited to foster a distilling industry with access the purest water from the nearby Cooley Mountains.Since the late 1600’s brewing has been at the heart of Dundalk with breweries in the area. But it was in 1896 that established a new brewery at this site on the Carrick Road called Great Northern Brewery.

Based on the former site of Great Northern Brewery in Dundalk, Great Northern Distillery is to provide premium bulk whiskey for the Irish and abroad markets. With the capacity of 16M litres of alcohol per annum and with scope to expand, Great Northern Distillery will produce Single Malt, Pots Still and Single Grain Whiskey to customers of the fastest growing spirit in the world. Dundalk has a rich history of Distilling which GND wish to continue and expand upon.

The former Cooley Distillery boss plans to spend €35m over four years to transform the former Harp Lager brewery into one of the biggest in the country. Teeling said he hoped to have construction completed at the site by December, with the hope of being operational early in the New Year.He revealed that three copper kettles will be adapted into pot stills, which will allow the company to build a grain and pot still distillery in the same still room.

The full capacity of the distillery will be three million cases. The distillery will be operational 24 hours a day from Monday to Friday and is expected to employ between 25-30 people. Its produce will mainly be sold to third parties, with the plan being to distill grain whiskeys, pot still whiskeys and single malts for both the national and international markets.
